Colorado Springs police K9 getting new custom bullet protective vest

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) member is getting some new gear!

CSPD says K9 Koa, their newest member to the K9 team, is getting a new custom-fitted bullet and stab protective vest. According to officials, the donation is through Vested Interests in K9's (VIK9), a nonprofit that helps law enforcement K9's across the country.

VIK9's website says they have donated over 6,600 vests ballistic vests since they were founded in 2009, as well as over $185,000 in K9 medical first aid kits. CSPD says Koa's new vest is National Institute of Justice certified and will be made specifically for Koa.

The vest, which CSPD says is valued around $1,800, was sponsored by a local resident and will have a special embroidered message.
