CSPD investigating shooting that left one dead on South Nevada Avenue

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO13) -- A heavy police presence was along South Nevada Avenue, just north of I-25 this morning, Thursday, May 23.

Officers said that they were investigating a shooting that happened just around 6 a.m.

Police initially got a call about an auto-pedestrian accident but when they got to the scene they found evidence of a shooting instead; they say that an unidentified man was shot and later died at a local hospital.

"I believe it was somebody driving, a passer-by (who reported the incident)," said police spokesperson Caitlin Ford. "I don't believe it was any other involved party that called us. I believe that it was somebody, just a witness who saw the injured man. We're still trying to identify and locate a suspect."

Police initially closed a quarter-mile of South Nevada, from the I-25 exit ramp to just north of the railroad tracks past Mill Street; eventually, the southbound lanes also were closed after officers said that they found blood in the street.

In addition to closing three intersections along Nevada, police also sealed off part of a convenience store parking lot, an entire liquor store parking lot and a nearby homeless camp.

It's unknown whether the victim belonged to the homeless community that frequents the area.

Ford was asked if an altercation started may have somewhere else along Nevada and ended at the I-25 off-ramp.

"I don't know," she said. "The Metro crime lab is going to come out and process that and gather all that evidence, make sure that there we're not missing anything. And that's what's going to take quite a while, to make sure that we get everything.

The Nevada closure remained in place as of noon Thursday.

The closure further snarled rush hour traffic already adjusting to a road construction project on Nevada between I-25 and Brookside Street.

Congestion increased significantly on Tejon Street, a block west of Nevada, as drivers used it as the main detour.

Police ask for anyone with information on the case to contact them immediately.
