Suspect dead after shooting with police at Citadel Mall Monday night

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- An investigation is underway after Colorado Springs Police was involved in a shooting that left a suspect dead at the Citadel Mall.

Heavy police presence was first reported at the mall just before 6 p.m. Monday. Initial reports of an active shooter at the Citadel Mall were incorrect.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, they were doing some surveillance on a wanted suspect Monday afternoon. The suspect drove a stolen vehicle to the Citadel Mall to meet up with a group of other people in a second stolen vehicle.

CSPD said they went into the mall and officers waited for them to come back out. When they exited the mall, officers moved in to make an arrest.

That's when police said all five suspects tried escaping - with one person running back into the Burlington Coat Factory at the Citadel Mall. Once inside, he pulled out a gun and began shooting at police.

According to CSPD, the man was taken to a hospital where he later died.

The name of that man has not been released.

CSPD that the suspect was an adult, but three of the other four people arrested are minors. Three of the four suspects also had guns on them at the time of the arrests.

The one officer who fired the shot is on administrative leave, pending a review of this case.
