Woman dead after shooting in Boulder County, suspects arrested

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Three people have been arrested in connection to a shooting that left a woman dead in northeastern Boulder County, according to 9NEWS.

Sunday, around 12:15 a.m., a Larimer County deputy attempted to pull a driver over on suspicion of DUI, according to the Boulder County Sheriff's Office. Deputies said the driver refused to stop and headed southbound on Highway 287 close to Highway 56, that's where the deputy decided to stop pursuing the driver.

Later, a car was found disabled in the area of Highway 297 and Yellowstone Road, deputies said. Several people were seen fleeing from the car.

Deputies said they believe the shooting victim and her mom saw the car as it stopped near Highway 287 and Yellowstone Road. After the suspects left the disabled car, one of them shot at the women's car with a handgun, hitting the daughter in the passenger seat.

The victim, a 21-year-old woman from Denver died after she was taken to the hospital.

According to police, they believe the suspects fired the shots in an attempt to carjack the victims. Police said the suspects and the victim did not know each other.

The suspects were found in a camper parked on a residential property, close to where the car had been left, police said. Police arrested two people in connection to the shooting.

Martin Cerda, 23, from the Greeley area was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Second-degree murder
  • Attempted aggravated robbery
  • Vehicular eluding
  • Possession of a weapon by a previous offender

Adriana Vargas, 24 from the Greeley area was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Second-degree murder
  • Possession of a weapon by a previous offender
  • Many outstanding arrest warrants not in connection with the shooting

A third suspect was arrested on many separate warrants out of Weld County, deputies said.
