How to get help with your heating bill as winter approaches
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- With the first snowfall for a lot of Southern Colorado taking place this week, it’s time to brace for those winter heating bills — which will likely be higher than last year. Fortunately, help is available for those in need.
The Department of Energy is predicting heating bills will jump 28 percent this season, as a result of higher fuel prices, combined with higher heating demand because of a forecast of slightly colder weather than last winter.
If you’re worried about the cost of staying warm this winter, there are programs you can reach out to for help, like LEAP.
"The Low-Income Energy Assistance Program also referred to as LEAP, assists low and moderate-income households pay their winter heating expenses," said Theresa Kullen, State of Colorado LEAP Program Manager.
Applications for LEAP open up next Tuesday, November 1.
But, if you’re eligible, that money is available all winter long. So, if you realize in February you’re having trouble keeping up with bills, you can still apply.
LEAP's requirements are also more generous than some other programs, even approving those who might not typically qualify for assistance.
"So a household size of one, for example, the maximum monthly income level is $2,880 a month," said Kullen. For a household size of four, it's $5,539 a month."
Outside of LEAP, Colorado Springs Utilities says it also offers payment plans and its own local assistance program.
"We have a local program called Project Cope, and that is to help customers who might not meet those income guidelines of the LEAP program, but might be in an emergency sort of situation and need assistance," said Natalie Eckhart, Colorado Springs Utilities Spokesperson.
There's also a way to avoid fluctuating utility bills with Colorado Springs Utilities.
"Another program that we recommend for all of our customers is our Budget Billing Program," said Eckhart. That is a way that we can evenly spread their utility bills throughout the year. So it takes away those swings that might occur because of weather-driven events."
With months of cold days and nights on the way, those offering support are encouraging those in need to reach out.
"We are one of the few programs where an in-person interview is not required," said Kullen. "You can apply online, you can apply by mail. You're not required to come in. We look at ways to break down barriers for people applying. We are here to help, that's what our funding is for. So if you remotely think that you might be eligible or you have questions, reach out to our Heat Help Hotline at 1-866-HEAT-HELP (1-866-432-8435)."
LEAP is a lump sum benefit payment for the heating season, which is November through April. So even if you apply for help in January, you’ll actually get money for previous bills paid in November and December as well.
