July vehicle registration renewal reminders arriving late in Colorado

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Department of Revenue revealed that a computer programming update is responsible for thousands of late vehicle registration renewal reminders to vehicle owners across the state this month.

The state began mailing July 2022 notices out Wednesday and will take between 7-10 days to arrive; the situation may also affect renewals due in August.

Chuck Broerman, clerk and recorder for El Paso County, said Thursday that the situation isn't serious because notices are mailed out only as a courtesy reminder.

"You have a 30-day grace period after the month your renewal is due, to pay," he said. "So you shouldn't have anything to worry about, unless you wait until the last minute -- which we don't recommend."

Broerman said that around 4,000 people each month don't renew in time and pay a $25 late fee.

Late-arriving vehicle registration notices are not unusual, he explained; delays are occasionally caused by programming updates required by the Legislature to reflect new laws.

"(It's) to allow for the transportation sustainability program to be implemented -- and that program will now add fees and taxes to electric and hybrid vehicles," he explained. "So they had to change the programming of our drive system that we use for renewing vehicles and titling vehicles."

The state says that regardless of whether a notice arrives late or not at all, affected vehicle owners should know when their renewal dates are and plan accordingly.

Broerman said that people can renew immediately if they go to a county DMV office -- which requires making an appointment -- or to a 24 hour DMV kiosk.

Renewing by mail or online can take up to a week.

Some days at the DMV offices are better than others.

"I ask people to stay away from Mondays and Fridays," Broerman said. "They're always extremely busy in our offices. "The best days to come to our office are always Wednesdays. Wednesdays and Thursdays are typically the lightest volume days."

He added that the county's DMV office on Union Boulevard is the only one in the state open on Saturdays.
