Dangerous road conditions expected to continue, CDOT officials say

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Officials with the Colorado Department of Transportation said slick road conditions are expected to persist throughout the day Thursday due to below average temperatures. The snow fall on top of already icy roadways isn't make the jobs of their snow plow drivers any easier, either.

Drivers can expect to see 20 plows in El Paso County, 30 in Pueblo County, and another 10 to 14 in the Eastern Planes. Officials said their crews have been mitigating our roads for the entire week, and it hasn't been easy.

"A lot of times what happens with snow plows is they kick back snow and cause their own little ground blizzard," said Michelle Peulen with the Colorado Department of Transportation. "We’ve actually seen three plows hit in a situation like that this week because a car got too close when snow was getting kicked up.”

If you are on the roads to Thursday, CDOT officials suggest having solid tread on your tires. Depending on how bad road conditions are, they may even put traction laws into effect. According to our state’s traction law, drivers must have snow tires or chains on their car if it's not four-wheel or all-wheel drive.
