COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Springs Police Department announced Friday that one of their officers recently died in a motocross accident.

Officer James "Jamie" Palaia tragically passed away Thursday while off-duty. CSPD says Palaia had been participating in motocross -- a form of motorcycle racing on a closed dirt circuit -- when an accident took his life.

Palaia served with CSPD for 13 years. In addition to his time as a patrol officer, he served with the Motor Unit and with the School Resource Officer Unit at Liberty High School and Mann, Russell, and Jenkins Middle Schools.

He was 48 years old.

"We ask that you take a moment to honor Jamie and to keep his family in your thoughts and prayers," said CSPD in a social media post.
