Gov. Jared Polis gives update on COVID-19 in Colorado, April 22
DENVER (KRDO) -- Gov. Jared Polis is giving an updated Wednesday on the status of COVID-19 in Colorado and what the state is doing to prepare for his "safer at home" phase of recovery.
We'll have a livestream of the conference with Polis starting around 1:30 p.m. WATCH BELOW:
Polis issued an updated Monday with guidelines for the state following the expiration of his stay-at-home order. Schools will remain closed for the rest of the school year, but many businesses will be able to open on April 27 -- albeit with restrictions. Click here for a full look.
Governor Polis' robust strategy includes the following:
- 60-65% social distancing maintained
- Vulnerable populations and older adults must stay at home except when absolutely necessary
- Increased protection measures, compliance and enforcement for senior congregate care facilities
- Increasing testing and aggressive contract tracking program
- Building more healthcare capacity
- Face covering wearing culture
- Excellent hygiene at all times
The Governor says the state will be adding 600 beds to the Colorado Convention Center and 250 beds to an Event Complex, called The Ranch in Loveland, Colorado.
In terms of increasing our healthcare capacity, Governor Polis says, "Having those 850 beds gives us more confidence that Coloradans wont die because we don't have the simple medical interventions that can save them. If we're successful, we want to make sure Coloradans who contract COVID-19 have the fighting chance of making it through it."
For testing, Polis outlined that 150,000 tests are arriving in Colorado by the end of the week. The state is also partnering with Colorado State University to expand testing for workers at skilled nursing facilities who are treating the most vulnerable population.
