Local teacher arrested for alleged online child exploitation with a minor in Florida

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) says it has arrested a local teacher after a tip from the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) in Florida.

According to CSPD, the Internet Crimes Against Children/Human Trafficking Unit received a cybertip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that was also sent to SCSO.

Officials say the cybertip including information that an adult male in Colorado was conversing with a juvenile female in Florida.

CSPD says a detective with SCSO identified the juvenile victim and other details about the case, including explicit photos and videos the victim had sent to the suspect.

CSPD says it was then contacted by SCSO and provided information about the suspect, which led them to 46-year-old Nicholas Madson. According to CSPD, Madson is a teacher at CIVA Charter High School.

According to officials, SCSO obtained an arrest warrant for Madson with a felony charge for soliciting a child for unlawful sexual conduct using computer services.

CSPD says detectives and the FBI contacted Madson on Thursday and took him into custody. They say additional follow-up investigations are ongoing to recover any additional evidence. CSPD says criminal charges from Colorado could come based on any additional evidence.

CSPD says the investigation is open and active investigation, and anyone who may have had inappropriate contact with the suspect, or any information that could assist detectives in the investigation is asked to contact CSPD at 719-444-7000, or call the Pikes Peak Area Crime Stoppers at 719-634-STOP.
