Pueblo police arrest man accused of shooting at officers during pursuit

Pueblo Police Department

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) --A 28-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after Pueblo Police say he fired several shots at patrol units during a pursuit early Friday morning.

According to the Pueblo Police Department (PPD), around 1 a.m. on Aug. 7, officers spotted a stolen car near East 1st Street and Norwood Avenue while responding to a separate call.

PPD says the car had triggered multiple alerts throughout their shift and was easy to identify due to a missing front bumper.

When police tried to contact the driver, they say he immediately reversed, lost control, and blew a tire. PPD says the suspect continued to drive away despite the damage and fired several shots at patrol units. Two vehicles were hit, including a patrol vehicle and a parked car, confirmed law enforcement.

According to PPD, they performed a Pursuit Intervention Technique, stopping the vehicle near East 4th Street and Erie Avenue.

Adonis Ortiz Lopez was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted first-degree homicide, motor vehicle theft, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and felony eluding, says PPD.

Police say the suspect was taken to the hospital after appearing to be sweating heavily when arrested and informed officers that he had ingested a small bag of narcotics.

According to PPD, Ortiz Lopez had four felony warrants and two misdemeanor warrants that totaled $91,000 in bonds, which police say were primarily related to motor vehicle theft and narcotics offenses.
