Man arrested after armed carjacking in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A man has been arrested after a carjacking in Colorado Springs earlier today.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), officers responded to a call from the 5000 block of North Academy Boulevard on the afternoon of Friday, July 17.

CSPD says a man threatened the owner of a gray Toyota 4Runner with a gun and demanded the keys. The victim handed over the keys and the man stole the car. Detectives with the motor vehicle theft unit, tactical officers, K9 officers and the Real Time Crime Center were able to find the stolen car two hours after the carjacking, according to officials.

39-year-old Riaan Schwabe was found driving the car, and was stopped by tactical officers in the 1500 block of Space Center Drive, according to CSPD. Schwabe rammed officers with the stolen car in an attempt to flee but wasn't successful.

CSPD says Schwabe was found with a loaded handgun and illegal narcotics on him.

Officials say Schwabe was taken into custody and charged with special offender, aggravated robbery, motor vehicle theft, menacing, possession of a defaced firearm, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and reckless driving.
