Alleged overnight thefts cost High Banks Speedway owner $50,000 as renovations continue

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- High Banks Speedway is undergoing a $4 million renovation ahead of its planned grand reopening in May 2027; however, a series of alleged overnight thefts is creating new challenges for the project.

Owner Steve Lacy tells KRDO13 that three overnight thefts in the past week have resulted in approximately $50,000 worth of stolen equipment. He says he has also spent an additional $75,000 on security measures in response to the incidents.

Lacy provided KRDO13 with photos that he says show a van driving through a fence on the property and towing away stolen equipment.

He says the thefts have also affected the renovation timeline, as contractors are no longer willing to leave their equipment at the site overnight.

The incidents are adding to the challenges of getting the speedway ready to reopen after its extensive renovation.

"I'm just very disheartened with what is happening right now, and I just hope it stops," Lacy said.

Lacy says the repeated thefts have left him increasingly frustrated after investing significant time, work and money into bringing the track back to life.

KRDO13 reached out to law enforcement to confirm reports of the thefts and is awaiting a response.

The speedway is still hoping to reopen in May 2027.
