UPDATE: CCSO says the shelter-in-place was over and the suspect had surrendered peacefully as of Wednesday night

CUSTER COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Custer County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) has issued a shelter-in-place order for a five-mile radius near Rocky Ridge Road.

According to law enforcement, deputies responded to shots fired near the road and confirmed that the scene is contained but not secured.

CCSO says around 9:50 a.m., officers were notified of a call for an abandoned truck on Rocky Ridge Road, and arrived sometime later. A deputy arrived on scene and called for a tow truck driver.

CCSO then says around 11:25 a.m., the deputy called the radio to say they were under "small arms gunfire," but the deputy and a civilian on scene were not injured.

CCSO then sent an emergency alert via Everbridge with a shelter-in-place order within a five-mile radius.

According to officials, additional deputies and Posse members arrived as the gunman was barricaded in a two-story home and continued to fire shots. CCSO says they also brought in their armored vehicle, and a deputy and clinician tried to talk to the gunman.

CCSO says it requested emergency assistance from the Colorado State Patrol and the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office. They say as of 2:55 p.m., no one had been injured but the gunman continued to fire out of the home.

Custer County Sheriff Rich Smith says the U.S. Marshals Service also sent help. The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office SWAT team offered to relieve other teams. The FBI office in Colorado Springs was in the process of responding when the suspect surrendered, CCSO says.

CCSO says they are in contact with the school board, superintendent and school resource officer, but because the incident was contained and away from the school, a nearby school was not placed on lockdown. The school did cancel its bus route that serves the Oak Creek Grade area for the afternoon, according to officials.

Details at this time are limited.
