Harrison School District 2 planning to close elementary school, combine others to create two K-8 campuses

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Harrison School District 2 (D2) says it is planning to combine two elementary and middle schools, and closing another elementary school.

D2 says Turman Elementary School will be closing, and students will move into two nearby schools. Students will move to either Giberson Elementary School and Soaring Eagles Community School based on a new boundary plan.

It also says Oak Creek Elementary and Fox Meadow Middle School will become a K-8 campus at Fox Meadow. Bricker Elementary and Panorama Middle School will also become a K-8 campus at Panorama.

D2 says the plan comes after a yearlong review looking at enrollment trends, capacity, transportation, future growth, and the district's long-term needs.

“We recognize that these changes impact our students, families and staff in these school communities, and sharing this information early in the school year is important to us,” Superintendent Dr. Wendy Birhanzel said in a press release. “We are committed to approaching this process thoughtfully, communicating openly and keeping students at the center of our decisions.”

D2 says a question-and-answer page is available on their website.
