WATCH: Douglas County Sheriff’s K9s practice rappelling

Douglas County Sheriff's Office

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Some of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) K9s went airborne during a rappelling training recently.

DCSO says K9 rappelling is more common for training than it seems. According to officials, it comes in handy during calls and other deployments for their furry friends. Photos and video show the dogs being rappelled down a training building before being sent in to practice finding items.

DCSO says it's especially helpful because they can't always choose where suspects are going to go, so having the dogs trained for any scenario is beneficial.

One deputy says he used the technique recently in the field to find a suspect in Castle Pines. They said that while tracking burglary suspects, they came up to a 35-foot wall and were able to safely rappel a DCSO K9 down with his specialized harness.
