CSP warns of risks of drowsy driving as flu and cold season approach

Colorado State Patrol

STATEWIDE, Colo. (KRDO) -- As flu and cold season approaches, the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) is reminding drivers the potential risks of driving after taking prescription or over-the-counter medications.

According to CSP, many commonly used over-the-counter medications can impact a person's ability to operate machinery, including driving.

CSP says drivers taking medications, especially in new or higher dosages, should try not to drive until they can figure out any impacts it may have on their driving. CSP says medications could have side effects that include drowsiness, nausea and slow reaction times.

The National Safety Council says drowsy driving can be very similar to driving under the influence, and can make drivers more likely to get into an accident if they are tired.

CSP says if drivers notice they are getting tired, to pull over and take a nap in a safe place. The National Sleep Foundation says some signs of drowsy driving that are similar to signs of drunk driving are:

  • Heavy eyelids or frequent blinking
  • Frequent yawning
  • Daydreaming and trouble focusing
  • Drifting back and forth between lanes
  • Hitting a rumble strip
  • Drooping head
  • Poor recall of the last few miles
  • Missing signs or exits
  • Restlessness, irritability, and aggressiveness, including tailgating
