Voters say they received multiple ballots in Pueblo County, including ones with only one ballot measure
PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Ballots are officially arriving in mailboxes across Colorado, but some in Pueblo County say they've received multiple ballots for the same person ahead of November's general election.
KRDO13 viewers in Rye and Pueblo West have reached out saying they have received multiple ballots. Rye resident Vance Whittington and his wife say they received two ballots each in the mail on Tuesday.
“It’s very confusing. What do we vote on? What do we send in? Which one's going to be trashed? I'm very confused,” Whittington said.
Whittington says the first ballot he got was complete with all state and local questions, but the second only listed one special measure for the Rye Fire District. He says it was also addressed to a P.O. Box he says he got rid of years ago.
Whittington and other residents say they want to make sure their votes don't get disqualified. Whittington says he's talked to at least ten neighbors and friends in Rye who also received more than one ballot.
A KRDO13 viewer in Pueblo West said he received three ballots.
This isn't the first time Pueblo County has faced issues and confusion with ballots. In 2022, mislabeled ballots were sent out, and in 2023, teenagers who were too young to vote received ballots in Pueblo West.
Pueblo County Clerk and Recorder Candace Rivera says the Election Department says some people may receive multiple ballots based on where they live, but that "a lack of accuracy in vetting the registered voter lists on behalf of the related entities resulted in a limited number of property owner ballots being mailed incorrectly." By "entities," she means those responsible for submitting voter lists to the county for special districts.
The Election Department says receiving more than one ballot doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem. Rivera says anyone who has received one or more ballots is encouraged to contact the Pueblo County Election Department with questions.
The Pueblo County Clerk and Recorder Election Department provided the following statement to KRDO13:
"The Pueblo County Election Department has received questions from members of the public who received one or more property owner ballots related to the 2026 November General Election. We want to provide clarification and reassurance regarding the reason for receiving multiple ballots.
Due to local ballot issues being included on the 2026 November General Election, property owners in specific districts may receive multiple ballots based on their registered address. The entities who submitted content to be included on the November ballot are contractually responsible for accurately vetting and certifying registered voter lists prior to submitting them to the Election Department. Once the certified mailing lists are received from each entity, the Election team proceeds by ordering ballots using the information provided.
In this instance, a lack of accuracy in vetting the registered voter lists on behalf of the related entities resulted in a limited number of property owner ballots being mailed incorrectly. The property owner ballots were therefore generated from the certified list submitted to the Election office rather than from an error on behalf of the Election team. This matter is NOT the result of an error by the Election Department.
We understand that receiving more than one ballot may be confusing or concerning; however, receiving multiple ballots does not necessarily indicate that there is a problem. All citizens who receive one or more property owner ballots are encouraged to contact the Pueblo County Election Department with any questions.
We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding and apologize for any confusion this may have caused. Our office remains committed to accurate, transparent, and secure elections."
A United States Postal Service spokesperson gave KRDO13 the following statement:
"The role of the Postal Service is to safely and securely accept, process, transport and timely deliver election mail prepared by authorized election officials.
If a voter receives more than one ballot, they should contact their state or local election office, which is responsible for voter lists, ballot issuance, and replacement ballots.”
