Man dies in custody after medical emergency during transport to El Paso County Jail

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) is investigating the death of a man who suffered a medical emergency while being transported to the El Paso County jail.

According to CSPD, officers responded to a disturbance call in the 2700 block of North Prospect Street on Sept. 30. Officers contacted an adult male suspect and took him into custody before transporting him to the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.

Before the man could be booked into jail, CSPD says he suffered an unknown medical event inside a patrol car parked in the jail's secure vehicle entrance.

Law enforcement says officers attempted life-saving measures and called for medical assistance, but the man did not survive.

CSPD's Homicide Unit responded to investigate the death, which the department said is standard procedure when the circumstances surrounding a death are unknown.

The El Paso County Coroner's Office will determine the man's identity, cause of death and manner of death.

The investigation remains ongoing.
