CPW lifts voluntary fishing restriction on Arkansas River near Pueblo

Katie Rohwer

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has lifted its request for anglers to avoid fishing a section of the Arkansas River near Pueblo.

The voluntary restriction, issued Aug. 6, asked anglers to avoid fishing the river's tailwater between Pueblo Boulevard East and its confluence with Fountain Creek from noon to midnight.

The request followed low water levels and high temperatures that created difficult conditions for fish, particularly those caught and released.

Cooler temperatures and increased precipitation have since improved conditions along the affected stretch of the river, allowing CPW to lift the request, officials said.

"We appreciate the anglers and guides who gave fish a break during this especially difficult summer," said Carrie Tucker, a CPW aquatic biologist.

CPW says they will continue monitoring water levels, temperatures and fish health. The agency warned it could implement another closure if conditions worsen, particularly if water levels drop this fall and winter again.

Anglers are encouraged to check current fishing restrictions and river conditions before heading out.
