WATCH: Tortoise rescued by Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, neighbors after escaping yard

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) says it helped save a tortoise that had run away from home back in August.

According to officials, an animal control officer was sent to a report of a wandering tortoise in Littleton on August 31. There, they encountered Lard, a Sulcata tortoise weighing just under 100 pounds. JCSO says Lard escaped a fenced yard and headed into the neighborhood streets.

According to officials, Lard's owner had tried to navigate Lard back home but he was uncooperative. The JCSO animal control officer worked with a bystander to pick Lard up and return him home.

JCSO says Lard is now safely back home.
