Increased CSP patrols, drone restrictions in place ahead of Sunday’s Broncos game

DENVER, Colo. (KRDO) -- Law enforcement and state officials are reminding people of some important safety notices before the Sunday afternoon Denver Broncos home game.

The FBI, along with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Denver Police Department (DPD), and Denver Broncos, say its rules about limited drone use around Empower Field at Mile High during game days will be in effect this year.

According to officials, airspace within three miles of Empower Field is restricted one hour before and one hour after an NFL event. They say temporary flight restrictions may also be in place for a wider area for other large events at the venue.

The FAA says violations of the rules could face a fine of up to $75,000 per violation, as well as a loss of their pilot certifications and drone confiscation. Officials say on top of that, law enforcement could also pursue criminal penalties, including a fine up to $100,000 and potential jail time.

Officials say to check for active flight restrictions using an FAA-approved B4UFLY service provider for real-time information. More information on the flight restrictions is available on the FBI's website.

The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) says it is conducting a high-visibility traffic enforcement initiative focused on six counties around the metro region on Sunday ahead of the Broncos game. CSP says drivers should expect to see an increase in troopers throughout the afternoon and late evening in the following counties:

  • Jefferson
  • Clear Creek
  • Adams
  • Boulder
  • Douglas
  • Arapahoe

CSP says it is focusing mostly on impaired driving on major and feeder roads in the area. CSP says they will stop any dangerous driving they see while out there, though.

CSP asks if anyone encounters a driver they suspect is intoxicated, avoid the car and calls CSP when able.
