Colorado Springs ‘snow school’ returns to prep drivers and city equipment for wet weather

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- "Snow School" was back in session for the Public Works Department.

The school is a three-day program that lets city drivers get behind the wheel to make sure they are ready for the winter. Over 100 drivers participated in the course, which is something the city offers every September.

The purpose of the course is to make sure the drivers are equipped with the necessary skills to stay safe while on the roads.

"We really like to go over the procedures and make sure everybody knows and understands and is on the same page when it comes to snow callouts and how we're going to go about it," Clint Brown, operations manager for the City of Colorado Springs said. "It's important that when snow comes, our personnel is ready to respond and hit the road running. We don't want to have mistakes, especially early on in the season from inexperienced drivers or drivers that simply haven't been in the seat in a while.

Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade says the school also helps make sure the city is prepared with its equipment.

"As public servants, [this] happens before the community sees any of us," Mobolade said. "So we prepare, we practice, we maintain our equipment, we train our people. When the moment comes, we are ready to serve."

Both Brown and Mobolade emphasized the importance of giving the snow plows plenty of space when they work.
