Colorado Springs announces improvements on 31st Street, including Water Street bridge

COLORADO SPRINGS Colo. (KRDO) -- Two changes on the west side of 31st Street will be made by the city in the fall to improve safety on cross streets.

The 31st Street Improvement project is set to replace the bridge at Water Street. The other part of the project is changing the four-way stop at Fontanero Street to a roundabout.

The bridge on Water Street that extends over Camp Creek is 66 years old and requires improvement to its hydraulic capacity. The project is expected to start in the fall, according to the city.

Because of heavy traffic, the Fontanero Street intersection will be turned into a roundabout to improve the flow of traffic. Officials say this will help improve safety at the intersection and lower the risk for the possibility of collisions.

A pedestrian bridge on 31st Street over Camp Creek was finished in July of this year, and included a new six-foot-wide, ADA accessible bridge with ramps.

Construction will start on the Fontanero roundabout in the spring of 2027.

The city will hold an open house on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Holmes Middle School from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to discuss the projects. The city encourages residents in the community to attend.
