Colorado officials reminding travelers to stay aware as leaf-peeping season kicks off

STATEWIDE, Colo. (KRDO) -- As the fall temperatures start to show on forecasts, state officials are reminding people to be responsible as leaf-peeping season starts.

Because of the drought and dry conditions Colorado has seen this year, fall colors are going to start earlier and not last as long.

One of the hot spots already seeing some colors is the Guanella Pass in Clear Creek County. Officials there say they are expecting thousands of people there this weekend.

Because of that, officials are warning people to P.E.E.P. responsibly. They say that means:

  • Park in designated areas only
  • Expect heavy traffic
  • Exercise patience
  • Plan ahead (traffic delays, no parking, possible road closures)

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is also asking travelers to plan ahead and prepare for increased mountain corridor traffic. CDOT says the Colorado State Forest Service expects southern Colorado and the San Juan Mountains to peak in late September.

The Foothills and Front Range below 8,000 feet should peak in late September and early October, according to officials. The earliest peak will be in the northern mountains and high passes, and then the central mountain and Aspen corridors in mid to late September.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is also reminding people to plan as they go outdoors over the next few months, since parking gets crowded at certain trails. They are also reminding people to stick to the trails and avoid shortcuts.

CDOT is reminding people as they travel to see the leaves to keep their eyes on the road, pull over safely, use lower gears downhill and to prepare for early snow and traction laws.

CDOT has more information on potential alternate travel options available on its website.
