Girl shot after neighbors confront suspected car burglar in northeast Colorado Springs, police say

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A 10-year-old girl is recovering after she was shot early Thursday morning in northeast Colorado Springs after neighbors confronted a suspected car burglar, police said.

KRDO13 spoke to the family, who said their daughter is home from the hospital and is doing OK.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), it all started just after 2 a.m., when a caller reported two people who live at Shadow Mountain Apartments near Garden of the Gods Road and Nevada Avenue confronted a man believed to have been trying to break into cars.

During the confrontation, the man fired several shots from a handgun and ran off, police said.

CSPD said another caller reported that one of the bullets went through the wall of their apartment and hit their daughter -- a 10-year-old girl who was asleep in her bedroom. The girl was struck in the arm but her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, police said.

Neighbor Andrea Quigley lives across the hall from the victim and her family. She said she woke up to her dog barking in the middle of the night -- then heard the gunshots ring out.

She was visibly emotional, telling KRDO13 that she was concerned about the young girl more than anything.

“I get very angry when stuff like that happens to a child because no child has to go through that," Quigley said.

Police said the suspected car burglar was tracked down inside a home in a nearby apartment complex -- thanks to the help of a drone operator who followed his movements through the neighborhood.

The man arrested was identified as 25-year-old Keiyon Banks. He is facing multiple charges, including felony menacing and attempted murder, police said.
