Planned 9/11 anniversary flyover in Denver canceled due to concerns

DENVER, Colo. (KRDO) -- A planned flyover to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in Denver has been cancelled.

According to the Denver Office of Emergency Management (OEM), the flyover was intended to be part of a 9/11 memorial tribute by United Airlines. It was set to feature a Boeing 777 along with an F-16 aircraft from Buckley Air Force Base.

They were warning residents that the flyover would be highly visible from parts of Denver and might be more noticeable than a typical aircraft.

Denver OEM later posted on social media that the flyover had been cancelled following "concerns raised by members of the community." At the time, they said United Airlines' other remembrance events would still run as anticipated.

KRDO13's Denver news partners reported the memorial events, including the now-cancelled flyover, was only open to airline employees. Officials told 9News they were preparing people so as to not overwhelm emergency call lines from being overwhelmed with calls from concerned citizens.

According to our Denver news partners, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said the city was not asked if the flyover was a good idea.
