Lafayette pilot among those injured in fatal Miami cargo plane crash

LAFAYETTE, Colo. (KRDO) -- One of the pilots injured in a deadly crash at Miami International Airport Sunday when an Amazon cargo plane ran off the runway was from Colorado, according to our Denver news partners.

9News reports that 55-year-old Joseph Carroll, of Lafayette, was released from the hospital and is set to be interviewed by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) on Wednesday along with his copilot.

9News reports they were able to confirm Carroll's identity through information from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, his airline transport pilot certificate and a series of public records searches. Carroll's airline transport pilot certificate and the NTSB showed he had more than 7,100 hours of flight experience, according to our Denver news partners.

Five people were killed in the crash, and five others, including the two pilots, were injured. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office says all five people who were killed in the crash, who ranged from 47 to 75, worked for an airline cleaning company and were in a van on airport property at the time of the accident.

9News reports it is still unclear who was the pilot-in-command of the plane during the crash. The NTSB is expected to remain on scene as investigators document evidence and determine a cause for the crash.
