EAGLE COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- An Eagle County Sheriff's Office (ECSO) deputy shot and killed a bear after it charged at him outside an apartment complex.

According to officials, deputies responded to the bear on August 24 around 7:30 p.m. at an apartment complex in Eagle-Vail, where a group of around 40 people had gathered near a sow and her cubs and were taking videos of them. ECSO says Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) was already aware of the situation and was on its way.

The apartment complex had been the subject of a bear attack days before, where ECSO says a man was injured by a bear near the laundry room. Deputies say they got rid of the crowd and tried to haze the bear out of the area.

Body-worn camera footage from ECSO shows deputies yelling at the bears to try to move them, and when that didn't work, a non-lethal round was fired. While yelling, the sow charged at a deputy. That is when the deputy fired several shots, killing the bear.

CPW arrived at the scene around 8:50 p.m. and took the cubs to a rehabilitation facility.

ECSO says they are "heartbroken" that the bear was killed. They are reminding residents that bears are continuing to be active before hibernation begins and are asking people to give bears space when they see them.
