Motorcyclist dead after crash on Highway 24 westbound south of Cascade

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- A crash on Highway 24 westbound has left a motorcycle driver dead, according to Colorado State Patrol (CSP).

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), traffic was backed up between Waldo Canyon and Pikes Peak Highway near Cascade-Chipita Park after a crash around 1 p.m. on Monday.

According to officials, a motorcycle, driven by a 34-year-old male, was going westbound before going off the right side of the road. The motorcycle hit the side of the mountain and the rider was ejected.

CSP says the driver was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The crash caused a severe backup, and at one point CDOT reported they were using alternating lanes, allowing only one side of traffic to go at a time. As of 4:30 p.m. Monday, the traffic had cleared.

CSP says its Vehicular Crimes Unit is investigating the crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact CSP and reference case number VC260322.
