KRDO13 Investigates: FEC records reveal stark differences in who is funding Jessica Killin and Jeff Crank
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - The two major-party candidates running for Colorado’s 5th Congressional District have reported more than $5.3 million in combined campaign receipts, but KRDO13 Investigates found significant differences in where their money is coming from.
According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) records through June 30, Democratic challenger Jessica Killin’s campaign reported approximately $3.14 million in total receipts. Republican Congressman Jeff Crank’s campaign reported approximately $2.18 million.
Individual donors
Killin reported approximately $2.04 million in itemized individual contributions. That's nearly three times Crank’s $751,000.
However, KRDO13 Investigates’ analysis of those contributions found 82% of Killin’s itemized individual donor dollars came from people with addresses outside Colorado.
After Colorado, Killin’s largest sources were New York and Washington, D.C.
Crank’s individual donor money was more local. Approximately 64% of his itemized individual contribution dollars came from people with Colorado addresses. His largest sources outside the state were Virginia and Maryland.
Crank raised approximately $483,000 from individual donors with Colorado addresses, compared with Killin’s $369,000 - a difference of about $114,000.
Political action committees
Crank’s campaign received significantly more money from political committees.
FEC records show Crank received approximately $837,000 in contributions from other political committees - more than three times Killin’s $264,000.
Among the PACs that contributed a total of $10,000 directly to Crank’s campaign were:
- AIPAC PAC
- Phillips 66 PAC
- Parsons Corporation Political Action Committee
- TTM Technologies Political Action Committee
PACs contributing $10,000 directly to Killin’s campaign included:
- VoteVets
- Save Democracy PAC
- Fair Shot PAC
The $10,000 totals were often divided among multiple transactions.
Candidates’ own money
Killin also contributed approximately $632,000 of her own money to her campaign.
Crank’s FEC records show no candidate contributions or candidate loans during the period analyzed.
Campaign responses
Killin's campaign manager, Emily Dalgleish, called Killin’s campaign a "strong grassroots campaign" and said it has nearly 2,000 donors from El Paso County and more than 4,000 across Colorado.
Crank’s campaign has not responded to KRDO13 Investigates' request for an interview or comment.
