WATCH: Colorado State Patrol trooper stops wrong-way driver with patrol car

Colorado State Patrol

MORGAN COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado State Patrol (CSP) says a trooper used his patrol car to stop a wrong-way driver on Interstate 76 early Sunday morning.

According to CSP, officials received reports of a wrong-way driver around 2:20 a.m. on Sunday near Fort Morgan. Reports said a Honda was going westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-76.

CSP says a trooper responded to the area and was able to locate the car, then turned on his emergency lights and used his patrol car to stop the Honda by colliding head-on with the car to stop it from hitting other cars.

CSP says the trooper then was able to get out of the car and place the driver, 36-year-old Claudia Rodriguez from Sterling, under arrest. Rodriguez now faces the following charges according to officials:

  • Driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs or both
  • Reckless driving
  • Open alcoholic container in a motor vehicle
  • Failure to provide valid insurance upon request

CSP says Rodriguez was taken to a hospital then booked into the Morgan County Jail. The trooper was evaluated at a local medical facility then released with minor injuries.

CSP says the road was closed for several hours, but reopened around 6:45 a.m. Sunday morning.
