‘He was a superhero’: Fundraiser started for Colorado State Trooper seriously injured in traffic stop shooting

Colorado Springs, Colo. (KRDO) -- A fundraiser has been started for Trooper Skylar Hoehn, who was seriously injured in a shooting in Teller County while making a traffic stop on Tuesday, Aug. 25.

A husband, a father to three kids, a youth baseball coach, a Marine veteran — these are all things that describe Trooper Skylar Hoehn.

His longtime friend Dan Andrews said he knew something was up when he saw unmarked vehicles speed past him on his way to work Tuesday morning.

Just 15 minutes later, Andrews got the call that Trooper Hoehn had been shot.

They've been friends since their days playing football at Liberty High School in Colorado Springs.

Andrews said Trooper Hoehn has always been known for lighting up the room.

“We were in the airport for 30 minutes, and he’s coming up with how we can twirl our bags and hit a target. Of course, everyone’s into it because he’s making it happen. He’s just constantly making everyone around him enjoy their life,” Andrews said.

Andrews was emotional recalling what he heard in the scanner audio when Trooper Hoehn told dispatchers that he had been shot.

“It was overwhelming, but it was like he was a superhero,” Andrews said.

Trooper Hoehn mustered up the strength to get himself to the emergency room across the street. This didn't shock Andrews one bit.

“That’s the first time that we kind of were laughing because Skylar is that guy... Of course he got shot and drove himself to the hospital,” Andrews said.

Andrews said those few hours waiting to hear if his friend was going to make it felt like a month.

Trooper Hoehn sustained serious injuries in the incident. He was released from the hospital and is doing well recovering at home, according to CSP.

Donations to the GoFundMe will go toward meals and household expenses for the Hoehn family.
