Around 4.25 million gallons of untreated sewage enter Arkansas River near Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- State and local agencies are working to determine the potential impacts after approximately 4.25 million gallons of untreated sewage were accidentally released into the Arkansas River near Pueblo.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) say they are working with the City of Pueblo, Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment, and other local, state, and federal agencies following the spill.

According to officials, the release began on August 26 and was stopped by wastewater plant operators on August 27 after it was discovered.

The spill occurred from the City of Pueblo's wastewater treatment plant into the Arkansas River just east of Interstate 25, according to officials.

CDPHE says Pueblo County collected water samples, and results are expected soon. Officials say registered produce growers along the Arkansas River Valley have been notified.

Health officials say the raw sewage contains harmful bacteria that present risks to human health.
