Salida police cancel Flock Safety contract following resident concerns

SALIDA, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Salida Police Department (SPD) announced it is cancelling its contract with Flock Safety.

SPD says they are discontinuing the use of the Flock Automated License Plate Reader system. Officials say they have heard concerns from residents about the cameras, and it has raised questions about privacy and inappropriate use of technology with the Flock system.

"We recognize that the use of technology in public safety must be balanced with the privacy, civil liberties and concerns of the people we serve," Chief Russ Johnson said in a press release.

SPD says its officers will continue to use investigative tools and resources to address public safety concerns. The department also commented on recent vandalism related to the cameras, saying the damage cost taxpayers more money, and was not the reason for the change in the system.

Instead, Johnson says the decision came after several conversations with residents that led changes in the policies.

"We appreciate the community members who took the time to share their perspective with us," Johnson said. "Your input is an important part of how we evaluate our policies, practices and partnerships."
