Colorado State Patrol urges caution as students return to school, especially with electric devices

STATEWIDE, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado State Patrol (CSP) is reminding drivers to pay attention on the road, especially as schools across the state start back up again.

CSP says as schools come back and more cars are on the road, it's important to remember to keep cell phones and distractions away to avoid a crash. With schools back, it means more kids on foot walking and school buses in the area.

CSP also wants to highlight the added danger of e-bikes and scooters that some kids may be using to get to school. Officials told KRDO13 that the safe use of devices like these starts at home.

"Parents, you want to make sure you know where this device is allowed," CSP Trooper Gabriel Moltrer said. "You need to check with your local municipalities to see what laws and restrictions they have in place. That way you know it's okay for your child to be riding to and from school."

CSP says to start by researching whether or not e-bikes or e-devices are allowed on sidewalks as some cities and counties have different rules on where the devices can be ridden.

Officials are also reminding parents and kids that if the devices are used on the road, they need to ride in the same direction as cars and use bike lanes when able. They also have to yield to pedestrians and obey all traffic signs and signals.

CSP also reminds riders to always wear protective gear like helmets and to be visible at all times.
