Five people killed after vehicle crashes off cliff in Grand Junction

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KRDO) -- Five people are dead after a vehicle crashed off a cliff in Grand Junction Sunday morning, according to law enforcement.

Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD) says they responded to the 2000 block of Lookout Lane around 7:45 a.m. Aug. 9 after 911 dispatchers received a report that a vehicle may have driven over the edge of a cliff.

Grand Junction police and fire crews arrived and found a crashed vehicle on the side of the hillside.

Investigators say the vehicle was traveling southbound on Lookout Lane when it veered off the roadway and down the steep incline.

Five people were found dead at the scene. Investigators believe they died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The Mesa County Coroner's Office says all five occupants were 17-year-old boys who were all residents of Grand Junction. According to officials, three occupants were wearing seatbelts, including the driver and front-seat passenger. The two who were not wearing seatbelts were ejected from the car.

Crews with the Grand Junction Fire Department, Mesa County Search & Rescue, Grand Junction Police Department and Mesa County Coroner’s Office worked to recover the victims.

The identities of the five people have not been released. Police are investigating the crash, and speed is being considered as a possible factor.
