CLEAR CREEK, Colo. (KRDO) -- A Colorado State Patrol (CSP) trooper and two others are in the hospital after a four-car crash on Interstate 70 east of the Eisenhower Tunnel.

The incident happened on Monday, Aug. 10, around 10:45 a.m. and briefly shut down both sides of I-70.

According to CSP, a trooper who is also a K9 handler was parked on the right shoulder of I-70 eastbound when he got a call about a crash on the westbound side of the highway. The trooper turned on his emergency lights and turned left to get towards the westbound lanes when a Subaru Forester going east hit the driver's side door of the patrol car.

Both cars went across the center median and hit two more cars that were in the westbound lanes, a Chevrolet work truck and GMC Sierra, officials say.

According to CSP, the trooper suffered injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital where he is expected to recover. His K9, Buck, was taken to a vet as a precaution.

The driver and passenger of the Subaru were both taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries. Neither driver in the other cars was injured.

CSP says the crash in now being investigated by the CSP Vehicular Crimes Unit. Anyone with information is asked to call CSP and reference case number VC260276.
