Custer County Sheriff’s Office rescue baby bear from side of highway

CUSTER COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Custer County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) rescued a baby bear from the side of a highway today after receiving reports of a dog on the road.

Officials say a deputy arrived to reports of a dog on the highway near Airport Road, but arrived and found a baby bear that was malnourished and dehydrated. They say the bear, a female, also had an injured foot.

CCSO says it coordinated with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) to care for the bear before it was picked up by a CPW officer. It will now be taken to their facility near Del Norte for rehab and veterinarian care.

Officials say the baby bear will now spend the winter in an artificial den, and when she wakes up, she will be released to the wilderness.

CCSO says this was the second call for a bear they received on Wednesday. The other bear was herded out of town from Westcliffe, and CPW has a trap set for the bear to relocate it.
