Colorado Springs sees significant drop in homicide rates so far in 2026, new data shows

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A new report from the Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ) shows Colorado Springs saw an over 50% decrease in homicides so far this year compared to the first six months of 2025.

That drop is one of the largest in the 30 cities that provided data to CCJ. The data also showed the city had seen a drop in the number of car thefts.

The report from CCJ looked at 13 offenses across 36 cities. Across all the cities, officials report nine of the 13 offenses saw overall lower numbers in the first half of 2026 compared to the first half of 2025. Carjackings saw the biggest decrease while drug offenses saw the largest increase up 12%.

Colorado Springs saw the second-largest decrease in the crimes tracked by CCJ. KRDO13 reached out to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) to ask why that drop may have happened.

Officials there say it could be a number of things, including the use of technology as a force multiplier, improved response times and strategic deployment of its officers. CSPD also says it has been focusing on prolific offenders, while noting that a small number of individuals commit a disproportionate number of crimes within the city.
