Health officials warn of an increase in local salmonella cases

STATEWIDE, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) is warning residents of a significant increase in salmonella cases across the state.

Officials say that so far in July, there have been over 250 reported cases of salmonella. That is more than 100 cases over the average. CDPHE says the state's Public Health Laboratory uses genetic testing to compare how the salmonella bacteria looks to people who test positive for it.

CDPHE says it is working with local public health agencies, agencies in other states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to identify potential causes or connections.

Officials say no confirmed food, restaurant or supplier has been traced to the outbreak but it is currently under investigation.

CDPHE says symptoms of salmonella can include fever, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Anyone with these symptoms should contact a healthcare provider.
