Colorado Springs planning all-day festivities for ‘Colorado Day’ celebrating state’s birthday

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The City of Colorado Springs is getting ready to celebrate the state's 150th birthday next month.

The city is organizing events for "Colorado Day" on Aug. 1 to celebrate the anniversary of the state's official welcome to the U.S. Events will run from sunrise to sunset all across the city.

The first event of the day starts at the top of Pikes Peak for a sunrise opening before the city attempts to beat a Guinness World Record for "most people dunking donuts into coffee simultaneously," to celebrate the famous donuts made atop the mountain.

Gates will open at 4:30 a.m. for the sunrise opening, and guests must have timed-entry permits or shuttle reservations, according to organizers. The world record attempt will start at 11 a.m. at the Summit Visitor Center. Pikes Peak will reopen at 6:45 p.m. for a sunset opening, with timed permits or shuttle reservations required.

The Pioneers Museum will have a free Colorado Day event with live music, food trucks and birthday cake. It will also open a new exhibit, Freedom to Thrive: The American Experiment in Colorado Springs, according to organizers. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The day wraps up with live music and local foods at Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site. That event runs from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and includes six live bands, local artisan vendors and interactive historic experiences.

Tickets are $25 for people 21 and over, $5 for those ages six to 20, and free for those five and under, according to organizers. Tickets are available at Rock Ledge Ranch's website.
