Colorado fifth worst state for aggressive or careless driving crashes

STATEWIDE, Colo. (KRDO) -- New data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration put Colorado in the top five states for fatal crashes involving aggressive or careless driving.

According to data from Lending Tree, almost 40% of fatal crashes on Colorado roads last year involved aggressive or careless driving. That puts the state behind Arkansas, Louisiana, New Jersey and Hawaii.

The national average for fatal crashes involving unsafe driving is 12.9%, according to Lending Tree.

The Colorado State Patrol says the ranking includes fatal crashes that contained at least one unsafe driving behavior, including improper driving and inattentive driving. CSP says it investigated over 500 fatal and injury crashes involving a speeding driver in 2025.

CSP says if drivers encounter an aggressive driver, avoid them and get out of the way. CSP says to avoid making eye contact or hand gestures, and contact CSP as soon as it is safe to do so.

CSP says when reporting calls to be prepared to give information like a license plate number, location and vehicle description.
