Cañon City cancels Fourth of July fireworks show due to fire danger

MGN

CANON CITY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Cañon City has canceled its Fourth of July show at Centennial Park because of extreme fire danger.

City officials said the decision was made in conjunction with the Cañon City Area Fire Protection District due to dry, windy conditions.

Officials thanked the Fourth of July Fireworks Committee for working to find a safer alternative to traditional fireworks but said current conditions made canceling the show the safest option.

Despite the cancellation, officials confirm that two free Independence Day events will still take place:

  • Traditional Hometown Celebration at Centennial Park begins at 2 p.m. and features live music, food trucks, games, bounce houses, a pie-eating contest, vendors and more.
  • God & Country Music Festival at Veterans Park runs from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. and includes live music, entertainment, food trucks, vendors, a car show, presentations and ceremonies honoring members of the military, veterans, law enforcement and first responders.

City officials encouraged residents to celebrate safely over the holiday weekend as Colorado marks its 150th anniversary and the United States celebrates its 250th birthday.
