It’s not a bird. Not a plane. It’s a boat…on wheels in Pueblo?

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO)-- It’s not a boat in the water, it’s a boat on wheels.

They call it the “Boat Car,” a real boat mounted on top of a Volvo 960, and it’s turning heads everywhere it goes.

What looks like a 1974 boat cruising down the street is exactly that… sort of.

The so-called “Boat Car” is a real 1974 boat mounted atop a 1994 Volvo 960, and yes, it’s completely street-legal.

Owner Josh Bond, who has worked in the marine industry for more than three decades, says the idea started as something he simply thought would be cool.

“I’ve been in the industry 31 years,” Bond said. “It was just something I thought would be cool. My wife thought I was absolutely insane for doing it. But we went with it — and it turned out way better than we ever expected.”

The boat keeps its original 1974 paint color, giving it a true vintage feel. Bond says that while he may be the “captain,” bringing the Boat Car to life was a team effort. Local businesses helped with decals, upholstery, and interior panels to transform the unique build into a polished final product.

Josh wants to thank Tyler, Joe, Hunter, Ian, Harley, Holly, Tucker, Darrel and Casey for all of their help in making this project a reality.

What started as a spare car that needed to be moved due to HOA rules quickly evolved into one of the most eye-catching vehicles on Southern Colorado roads.

And wherever it goes, it gets attention.

From honks at stoplights to people pulling out their phones to snap photos, Bond says the reactions are his favorite part.

"The most important thing you know is that I have noticed just the smiles that it puts on everybody's faces," said Bond.

KRDO13 had the chance to hop aboard for a ride, and while it may look ready to set sail, we can confirm it drives just like a car.

For now, Bond says he’s simply enjoying the ride and the joy it brings to strangers across Colorado Springs.
