Colorado Springs Airport gearing up to see over 40,000 travelers this holiday weekend

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Memorial Day Weekend is fast approaching, marking the unofficial start of summer. The Colorado Springs Airport is gearing up to see a lot of passengers over the next few days.

Traffic this Memorial Day Weekend is 5-10% higher than a typical summer weekend through the airport.

From Thursday, May 25 through Tuesday, May 30, roughly 40,000 passengers are expected to travel through the COS airport, with Thursday being the busiest travel day.

Returning, Sunday, and Monday are expected to be the busiest travel days.

Although this weekend last year had more travelers, this summer airport officials expect a huge uptick due to adding more flights, destinations, and airlines. With about 90,000 new seats added in the market this summer.

Earlier in May, the Colorado Springs Airport began its TSA construction project. As they expand and remodel the area, surrounding retail shops have been moved around, and temporary walls have been put up. Although it's not expected to interfere with operations, it's still recommended to get to the airport early to allow for any delays.

"Understand what you can and cannot bring through the TSA checkpoint," Colorado Springs Airport Senior Public Communications Specialist Dana Schield said. "That's a common delay through the checkpoint is folks bringing prohibited items through with their carry-on. It slows down the line not only for you but for everyone else as well."

Last year the Colorado Springs Airport installed an overflow parking lot to accommodate the increase in high-volume travel days.

For those traveling this holiday weekend, it's important to give yourself extra time to park, check-in, get through the TSA screening and navigate the airport. Airport officials recommend at least 90 minutes.

There have been a couple of delays Thursday, but no cancellations.
