Burglary suspect dies following shooting involving Pueblo Co. deputies

COLORADO CITY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Three Pueblo County Sheriff's Deputies are on paid leave following a fatal shooting in Colorado City early Thursday morning.

Investigators say an armed suspect broke into or attempted break into multiple homes along the 4700 block of Santa Fe Drive in the southern Pueblo County community. 13 Investigates has learned that one of the homes the man broke into had a grandmother and her 9-year old granddaughter inside at the time of the break-in.

“Walked in, walked right into the house like he lived there,” Kevin Tanner-Rose told 13 Investigates.

4700 block of Santa Fe Drive in Colorado City Thursday morning.

Tanner-Rose says the man walked into his own family's home in Colorado City late Wednesday night holding a gun. His grandmother and 9-year old little sister were inside when the man walked in through the front door.

Tanner-Rose says the man walked into his father’s room, asking about his whereabouts. Fortunately, at that time his father was not home.

“Went into (my father's) room and kept asking "Where is he? I know he is here." Eventually (my sister and grandmother) locked themselves into the bathroom, and called the cops. Then he kind of just left," Tanner-Rose said. "I'm freaked out cause he knows who (my father) was. I’m not sure what was going on, or anything like that but it makes me worry a bit.”

The two residents inside were not harmed according to the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office.

Thirty minutes after midnight, Pueblo County Deputies encountered the armed suspect on the same block. The Sheriff's Office tells 13 Investigates he threatened to shoot the deputies on scene then pointed a firearm at them.

“Cover deputies that were on scene gave loud verbal commands for the suspect to drop the weapon and get on the ground," Undersheriff David Lucero said during a press conference Thursday afternoon. "The suspect failed to comply and engaged deputy sheriff’s who returned fire striking the suspect multiple times. They transported the suspect to Parkview medical center where he later died of his injuries.”

No deputies sustained injuries following the shooting. It's unclear at this time if the suspect fired his weapon.

Investigators believe the suspect attempted to break into multiple homes. They obtained security camera video from a separate home on the 4700 block of Santa Fe Drive that allegedly shows the suspect holding a firearm while he tries to walk in through the front door of the home.

However, Undersheriff Lucero said the armed suspect's motive is unclear at this time.

13 Investigates contacted the Pueblo County Coroner's Office for the identification of the armed suspect that was shot and killed by deputies, and are waiting on a response.
