$22.5 million in unclaimed property in Pueblo County available

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- In the city of Pueblo there are more than 180,000 unclaimed properties, including more than $20 million in cash, ready to be claimed.

Among the unclaimed property in the Steel City are 190 items from safety deposit boxes and more than 2 million stock shares. In Pueblo County there are more than 204,000 unclaimed properties, including $22 million in cash.

It's all part of the Great Colorado Payback, which in the 2020-2021 fiscal year returned nearly $43 million in unclaimed property to nearly 24,000 Coloradans.

“The Great Colorado Payback wants to make sure that you’re reunited with your money. And there’s a chance – at least 1 in 10 – that there’s unclaimed property, like gift certificates, unpaid wages, or uncashed checks, with your name on it,” said Colorado State Treasurer Dave Young.

Money or property that's turned over to the State Treasury for safekeeping is held for the owner or heir, and there are no time limits for filing a claim. The State Treasurer says that more than 1.7 million individuals as well as businesses, municipalities, schools, nonprofits, and hospitals, have unclaimed property.

Unclaimed property is defined in the United States as tangible or intangible property that has had no activity for a specific period of time. That includes, but is not limited to, stocks and dividends, mutual funds, checking and savings accounts, unpaid wages, securities, life insurance payouts, checks that have not been cashed within a certain time period, as well as the contents of safe deposit boxes for which the rent has been expired for at least five years. Unclaimed property does not include real estate or vehicles.
