U.S. Team Roping Colorado Championships look to continue rain or shine

KRDO

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- This weekend, the U.S. Team Roping Championships are happening in Colorado Springs.

The free, family-friendly event lasts through Sunday at the Norris Penrose event center. During the competition, nearly 2,000 teams will compete for a team title by roping a full-grown steer.

Ken Silver, who's been on the scene for more than 40 years, told KRDO this weekend he just wants to have a good time.

"Just to rope, have fun, and win a little bit," said Silver.

The event will feature some of the best athletes in the sport and a chance to win some serious cash.

Jeff Smith with 3-Point Productions is eager for this weekend following previous years which had restrictions due to the pandemic.

"This year we don't have any COVID restrictions so that'll be good, anyone is welcome to come to watch, we've got some vendors, we've got some great food here, and just expect to see a lot of horses and action."

It's an all-day event going on Saturday and Sunday. Doors open bright and early at 7:30 a.m. and the competition starts at 9 a.m.
