Stay cool as temperatures rise this summer

MGN

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A heatwave has hit Colorado Springs.

Xcel Energy and Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) have some energy, and money, saving tips to stay cool.

Close the blinds

CSU says that closing the blinds can protect your house from being heated up by the sun. They recommend blackout curtains.

Make sure all windows and doors are closed

Xcel Energy says that leaving doors and windows open can result in a loss of cool air. Open doors and windows also let the warm air in.

Use ceiling and portable fans

CSU says that ceiling fans, set to rotate counterclockwise, will push the cool air down. They also say that portable fans throughout your house can help the air move around. Xcel Energy recommends ceiling fans because they use less energy than air conditioning units.

Be mindful of what appliances you use and when

CSU says to use home appliances like dryers and dishwashers during early morning or late evening hours. While these appliances are on, they let off extra heat. They also say to grill outside or use the microwave and skip the oven.
